Food Establishment Information

Why do we inspect establishments?

Food establishment inspections are conducted to ensure that food is handled safely and properly throughout the process of receiving, preparing, and serving it. Inspections help to prevent foodborne illnesses by:

  • Monitoring food temperatures

Inspectors check the temperature of food during cooking, cooling, holding, and reheating.

  • Observing food handling practices

Inspectors look for good hygienic practices, such as hand washing, hair restraints, and employee eating.

  • Verifying equipment and facility requirements

Inspectors ensure that equipment is working properly and that storage areas are clean and properly labeled.

  • Checking water temperatures

Inspectors ensure that water temperatures are correct.

  • Verifying sanitizer use

Inspectors ensure that sanitizers are used at the correct level and in the correct manner.
